As the evening wore on and my friends’ snickers grew into giggles, I felt more demeaned by the whole scene. In the kitchen, my father slapped me for some imagined mistake on my part and sent me home before the party ended. “Never again will you work at one of those parties,” he told me when he and my mom arrived home that night. In retrospect, I realize now how desperate my family was for money and how much we had needed the money that night. But my father never asked me to work with him again.

But no matter which movie or book or play everyone in the house exposed me to, these theater people were relentless. I was there to learn — as much as they could teach me in ten weeks. During one of my parents’ visits, I decided that I’d had enough and begged to come home, but my mother insisted I stay. By the end of that summer, I was glad I had. Something had shifted in my life. I was being allowed entry into another world. “You’ve got talent,” they told me before I left, and although I had no real idea what talent was, I understood that it was a God-given gift and I should be grateful.
