In conventional video coding systems, the encoder performs predictive coding (motion estimation) to exploit the temporal similarity, which make its complexity much higher than that of the decoder. The Wyner-Ziv theory or Lossy Distributed Coding theory suggests that when frames are separately encoded but jointly decoded, similar coding efficiency could be achieved. Trellis coded quantization (TCQ) is a powerful quantization method which has already shown its power in distributed source coding area.
De Bosschere prediction macroblock can be divided into 4 partitions, namely 16 × 16 (type 3), 16 × 8 (type 4), 8 × 16 (type 5) and 8 × 8. The 8 × 8 submacroblock can be further subdivided into 8 × 4, 4 × 8 and 4 × 4 partitions. As such, we consider 15 macroblock types for 8 × 8 macroblocks depending on the partitioning within the submacroblocks. – The ﬁnal macroblock type is the skip macroblock type (type 21). For each of these 21 macroblock types, macroblock proﬁling computes the number of each of these macroblock types per frame.
The θ parameter in the above formula for computing the scenario operating frequency adds an additional scaling; the reason for this scaling parameter is twofold. First, the cycle count has the above mentioned small deviation when scaling the clock frequency. Second, some frames in a scenario may require a higher frequency than the scenario representative for meeting the deadline. However, given the fact that the variability within a scenario is rather small, this scaling parameter is fairly close to 1 in practice.
